Eighth Grade Math
Mrs. Fickes
Dear Eighth Grade Math Student:
This year in math we will be learning algebra concepts. We use math in many of our daily routines without knowing. One of the things that we try to do in this class is to relate concrete concepts to more abstract concepts. We will be involved in activities that incorporate math and writing throughout the year. We learn math concepts easier if we know the value of the concept. We will be using strategies you will need to be able to make connections in math. Some of the strategies that we will be using are: think-aloud,
think-pair-share, jigsaw, carousel, peer teaching, small and large group instruction, as well as other content literacy strategies.
Assessments will include the traditional assessments, including projects and journals.
The above gave you an idea of what the class is all about. I know there will be a lot of questions for this year. Here are some you may have and their answers.
How is my quarter grade calculated?
You will be graded on a point system. Each assignment, quiz, test, etc. will be worth different points.
Will there be help for math?
There will be help available for you. Help will be available from another teacher or me. Help maybe before school, during school, or after school. If you need help, please contact me if help is needed.
*It is the responsibility of the student to see me for that extra help. A pass will be needed if the help comes during the school day.*
What materials will I need for the class?
It is a given that you will need your binder with a math section (Interactive Notebook). You should have a calculator for home
use. If you do not have a basic 4 operation calculator that does just the basic operations, come to see me and I will be able to provide one for the night. There will be a calculator provided for the school day. Be sure to have a pencil or black pen for all math work. Work done in another writing utensil will result in the student needing to rewrite the work
after school.
What will the test consist of?
Tests are announced and will cover the unit material gone over. Each test will be multiple choice, simplifying, and/or word problems. These skills will be gone over in class.
Will we have quizzes?
Yes you will have quizzes. These are also announced. This is a good way to find out what skills you need to go back over
before the test.
Expectations?
General -
1) Come to class prepared.
2) Respect yourself and others.
3) Follow classroom and school rules.
Classroom-
1) Raise your hand to speak in big group discussions.
2) Stay in your seats until permitted to get up.
3) Refrain from behavior that may impede the learning of and be a detriment to the safety of self and others.
I’m sure you have other questions, but this gives you a good start. Remember, your job is to learn the material presented to you to the best of your ability. If you find yourself not understanding particular concepts as we go along, it is your responsibility to get the help you need. How well you do this year in Math is totally up to you, so put your best foot forward this year and do your best.
